How to Release Suppressed Emotions & Reclaim Your Energy
One of the common themes I’ve seen in healing sessions lately is suppressed emotions and how much energy it takes to keep them buried.
Some clients are aware they’ve got a backlog of emotional stuff that’s never been processed. Others are surprised to find they’ve been carrying emotions they weren’t even conscious of—until we name it in session and it suddenly clicks.
And once it does? It’s like taking the lid off a shaken bottle. That release, whether through deep cathartic tears or a quiet exhale, frees up energy they didn’t even realise they’d been using just to keep it all down.
Why Suppressed Emotions Drain You
Think of your body like a bottle of soft drink with the lid on tight. Every time you suppress sadness, anger, or fear, it’s like giving the bottle another shake. Eventually, something’s got to give.
Unreleased emotions can manifest as:
-
Low energy or chronic fatigue
-
Anxiety, brain fog, or low motivation
-
Digestive issues, headaches or body aches
-
Feeling emotionally “numb” or disconnected
If any of that sounds familiar, it might be time to let some of that pressure out—and allow yourself to feel.
A Simple Visualisation to Release Emotions
If you struggle to cry or don’t feel safe expressing your emotions, this campfire technique is a gentle and powerful tool to help you release.
Campfire Visualisation Exercise:
-
Find a quiet space where you feel safe and won’t be disturbed. Sit or lie down comfortably and close your eyes.
-
Visualise a sacred space—somewhere you feel calm, protected, and fully yourself. This could be a forest, beach, cave, or completely made-up. See the colours, hear the sounds, feel the textures.
-
Imagine a campfire in front of you. This fire is here to transform. It can take in your pain, anger, sadness, frustration—and turn it into something lighter.
-
Start expressing. In your mind, offload your emotions into the fire. Say what you’ve wanted to say. Cry, scream, shake, or just breathe deeply. If your body wants to move—let it. If you feel the need to make sound—do it.
-
Face the person (if needed): If there’s someone you need to release emotion towards, imagine them sitting across the fire. Say everything that needs to be said, uncensored. Let the fire hold it all.
-
End with stillness. When you’re ready, sit quietly. Thank the fire for its help. Notice how your body feels. You might feel lighter, clearer, or more grounded.
Why This Works
Your brain doesn’t always distinguish between “real” and imagined experience. Just like we cry during movies, our nervous system responds to the emotional truth of a moment. This technique gives your body and energy field permission to release—without needing the other person there, and without judgment.
You don’t have to carry it anymore.
Try it out and let me know how it feels.
And if this resonates deeply and you’d like more support processing what’s coming up, I offer intuitive healing sessions either online, remotely or in-person from my space in Wongawilli, near Wollongong.
Because your energy is precious. Let’s make sure it’s not tied up in the past.
