The Spiritual Benefits of Doing Nothing: Why Resting Can Move You Forward

The Spiritual Benefits of Doing Nothing

We live in a world that constantly demands our attention. As a small business owner and healer, I know how easy it is to feel like I must always be doing something. Whether it’s creating content, growing my client base, or brainstorming new ways to serve, there’s a deep inner drive to stay productive.

But here’s the truth: doing nothing is sometimes the most productive thing we can do—especially on a spiritual level.

Like many spiritually aware people, I used to feel deeply uncomfortable with stillness. In moments of downtime—waiting for coffee or in between tasks—I’d instinctively reach for my phone, scroll through social media, and fill the space. I was avoiding something: stillness, silence… myself.

We often do anything we can to avoid that space of nothingness. Why? Because it can bring up discomfort. It makes us confront what we’re avoiding—fears, uncertainties, beliefs that no longer serve us. And yet, that space is sacred.

Over the past two months, I was forced into that space. My usual early mornings of meditation and yoga fell away. My energy dropped. My body screamed for rest. I had just returned from a series of intense trainings, was starting to offer sessions in Wollongong, and the pressure to “get things going” was strong. But nothing seemed to be working.

Despite trying everything I could think of to get momentum in my business, I wasn’t seeing results. That triggered a spiral of stress and self-doubt. But instead of pushing harder, my guides told me clearly: “You’ve done enough. Rest.”

So I surrendered. No yoga. No pushing. No more strategy. Just rest.

It wasn’t easy. My logical mind protested. But I gave in—and what happened next shocked me.

Without doing anything, things started to shift.

Clients started coming. Ideas flowed. The energy around my business felt lighter and clearer. And I was happier—deeply, spiritually fulfilled. It felt like the universe was saying, “Now that you’ve stopped interfering, we can step in.”

That’s the magic: when we surrender, we open the door for spirit to work through us.

Of course, it’s not about never taking action. There’s a balance. I’m not suggesting you lie on the couch and expect miracles. But there’s a rhythm—do what you’re guided to do, then step back and allow. The pause is just as important as the action.

From a physical perspective, doing nothing allows the body to rest and heal. On a spiritual level, it helps us return to presence, release resistance, and realign with divine timing.

So if you’re feeling stuck or exhausted, maybe it’s not that you need to do more. Maybe you need to do less. Or even better—nothing at all.

Give yourself permission to pause. Let go. Be still. You might just discover that stillness is where the magic lives.
