How Your Job Affects Your Emotional Health—and What to Do About It

Emotional health and career change: Is Your Job Hurting You?

Many people think of health in terms of diet, exercise, and physical wellbeing—but emotional health is just as important. As an energy intuitive, I believe we can only achieve true wellbeing when we look at health through a holistic lens. And one of the most overlooked contributors to emotional health is your career.

Let’s break this down.

Most of us can divide our lives into three core areas: work, home/family, and social life. For many, work consumes the majority of our time and energy—leaving our personal and emotional needs fighting for whatever is left. If your job drains you, it can seriously affect your emotional health, mental wellbeing, and even your physical body.

When I worked as a lawyer, I felt constantly anxious, irritated, and emotionally depleted. A new email would fill me with dread. I’d carry frustration and stress in my body. And worst of all, I no longer recognized myself—I wasn’t the calm, joyful person I knew I could be.

These emotional symptoms are not isolated. Over time, unprocessed stress, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion accumulate in the energetic body. I’ve seen this time and time again in my healing work: energy becomes thick, dense, and stagnant. Left unresolved, these emotional patterns often manifest physically—as chronic fatigue, headaches, lower back pain, adrenal burnout, or even more serious illnesses.

So, what’s the solution?

It sounds simple—but it’s often the hardest step: change your job.

Yes, fears around money, family, or stability come up. But if your career is costing you your emotional health, it’s time to re-evaluate. Ask yourself:

Your emotional health and career change are deeply connected. When you align with work that fulfills you, something magical happens: your energy lightens, your health improves, and your joy returns. Life starts to flow again.

Remember this quote from the Dalai Lama:

“Man sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health… He lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

Let’s not wait until our body forces us to slow down. Embrace your passions. Make the change. Your emotional health—and your entire life—depend on it.
