How to Relieve Neck and Shoulder Tension Naturally During Stressful Times
Natural remedies for neck and shoulder tension
The holiday season is here, and while it’s meant to be a joyful time, many of us feel overwhelmed with the rush of buying presents, planning meals, and finalising everything before the year winds down. Even though it’s often thought of as a time to relax, the lead-up can actually be one of the most stressful times of the year.
One of the most common physical symptoms of stress? Tight neck and shoulder muscles—often leading to headaches or even migraines. Whether you’re prepping for a busy event, juggling end-of-year tasks, or just feeling the seasonal tension, here are natural remedies for neck and shoulder tension that you can try at home.
1. Massage the Base of Your Skull
Gently massage the area where your neck meets the base of your skull. This area can be tender, especially if you’re holding a lot of stress. Applying pressure here helps relieve tension in the upper neck and may reduce the chance of headaches.
2. Rub the Area Beside Your Sternum
The connective tissue and muscles at the front of your chest—especially the platysma—can contribute to shoulder and neck pain when tense. Use your fingers to gently rub the area on either side of your sternum and work your way up toward the neck to help release fascia and muscle tightness.
3. Massage the Top of the Arm
Place your palm flat on your shoulder with fingers pointing down your upper arm. Where your third finger lands is a great spot to massage. This area—where the deltoid meets the upper arm—can hold a lot of tension. Press gently and work through the tightness.
4. Try Magnesium
Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant. You can use it in several ways:
-
Take a magnesium supplement (if appropriate for you).
-
Apply magnesium spray directly to tense areas.
-
Soak in an Epsom salt bath for at least 30 minutes to relax the body deeply.
5. Breathe from Your Belly
When we’re stressed, our breath becomes shallow and concentrated in the upper chest. This can overwork neck muscles and contribute to tightness. Bring your attention to your breath:
-
Inhale and let your belly rise.
-
Exhale and gently draw your belly in toward your spine.
Just a few deep belly breaths can calm your nervous system and relieve some physical tension in the neck and shoulders.
Stress may be inevitable, but pain doesn’t have to be. By tuning into your body and giving it what it needs, you can move through even the busiest seasons with more ease and comfort.
Take a few moments for yourself today—you deserve it.
